Surge
Coca-Cola's aggressively marketed neon-green citrus soda that positioned itself as the extreme-sports answer to Pepsi's Mountain Dew. Heavy on caffeine and attitude, Surge fueled the mayhem marketing of the late 90s before vanishing from shelves in 2003 — only to surge back after a passionate fan movement brought it to Amazon in 2014.
Launched in the United States in January 1997 (after a Norwegian test run as 'Urge'), Surge arrived with the tagline 'Feed the Rush' and channeled the peak era of extreme-sports advertising: skateboarding, mountain biking, and intentional chaos. The neon-green liquid was heavily caffeinated and marketed to teens with in-your-face ads featuring stunts and energy that made Pepsi look tame. By the early 2000s, the trend faded and Coca-Cola discontinued Surge around 2003.
But the brand never truly died. A grassroots 'SURGE Movement' of nostalgic fans campaigned for its return throughout the 2000s and 2010s, and in 2014 Coca-Cola relented, making Surge available again primarily through Amazon. It remains a cult favorite and recurring limited-edition release, a rare comeback victory powered purely by 90s nostalgia.
