The soda that made a virtue of overkill: 'All the sugar and twice the caffeine.' The unofficial fuel of all-nighters, cram sessions, and anyone with a deadline and no intention of sleeping.

Jolt Cola was created by C.J. Rapp in 1985 and produced by The Jolt Company of Rochester, New York. Where every other cola was busy going diet, Jolt zagged hard in the opposite direction with a slogan that was practically a dare: 'All the sugar and twice the caffeine!' It was openly marketed to promote wakefulness, aimed at students and young professionals who wanted a stimulant that didn't pretend to be anything else.

That positioning made it a 90s cult object. Jolt became shorthand for pulling an all-nighter β€” the drink of choice for anyone cramming for an exam or burning the midnight oil, the can that signaled you were in it for the long haul. It never outsold the giants, but it didn't need to; its whole identity was being the extreme option on the shelf.

The brand's later years were turbulent: Rapp sold a controlling interest to Emigrant Capital in 2008, was pushed out as CEO in early 2009, and the company filed for bankruptcy that same year. Jolt made a brief comeback at Dollar General stores starting in September 2017 before quietly disappearing again around 2019, closing the book on the soda that dared you to sleep.
