The Backyardigans

The Backyardigans premiered on Nickelodeon on October 11, 2004, with a deceptively simple formula: five friends — Pablo the penguin, Tyrone the moose, Uniqua, Tasha the hippo, and Austin the kangaroo — wake up in their backyard and imagine themselves into an adventure. The show ran four seasons and eighty episodes through July 12, 2013, a steady presence on Nickelodeon's preschool lineup. Then, in 2021, TikTok discovered "Castaways," one of the episode songs. Adults began posting it, and the track went viral in over 745,000 videos; by June 2021 it hit number five on Spotify's viral chart. A preschool show that had quietly wrapped eight years earlier suddenly became a generational touchstone — proof that kid-show composers occasionally snuck actual songwriting into the preschool shuffle, and proof that the internet never forgets.
