Space Cases

Space Cases premiered on Nickelodeon on March 2, 1996, created by comic-book writer Peter David and science-fiction veteran Bill Mumy. It arrived in an era when Nickelodeon was still willing to bet on genuinely odd swings — not just animated comedies, but earnest, low-budget live-action adventures made specifically for kids.

The premise was pure stranded-adventure: a group of misfit students and two adults find themselves aboard an alien ship, far from Earth, with no clear way home. The cast had faces kids already knew: Walter Emanuel Jones — instantly recognizable as the original Black Ranger from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers — played Harlan Band, and Jewel Staite played Catalina in the first season, years before her adult science-fiction fame. Every episode wore its production constraints proudly, with no apologies for the weird premise.

Then, after two seasons and 26 episodes, it ended on January 27, 1997 — unresolved, the crew still not home. The show slipped out of rotation without ceremony, leaving no conclusion.
