Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom was born January 13, 1977 in Canterbury, England and trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His big break came when he auditioned for the role of Faramir in The Lord of the Rings and director Peter Jackson cast him as Legolas, the blond elf archer, instead — his first major role, straight out of drama school. The trilogy (2001–2003) made him a household name globally.

Bloom's peak came from anchoring two massive franchises at once. The same year the Rings trilogy concluded, he debuted as Will Turner, the blacksmith love interest, in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). Two trilogies — Legolas (2001–2003) and Turner (2003, 2006, 2007) — placed him at the center of two of the decade's biggest cinematic franchises. He also appeared in Black Hawk Down (2001), Troy (2004), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), and the romantic comedy Elizabethtown (2005), solidifying his place as a working leading man.

The teen-idol machinery cranked to full speed. He won multiple Teen Choice Awards and occupied the landscape of adolescent culture — wall posters, magazine covers, lunch-box crushes. The cultural moment was real and contained: by the late 2000s he had moved on to other roles and the fever broke, but the peak window was unmistakable.
