Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica
MTV's cameras moved in with pop's most photogenic married couple and struck gold in the very first episode, when Jessica Simpson stared at a can of tuna and asked, "Is this chicken, what I have, or is this fish?" Newlyweds turned domestic squabbles about laundry and Chicken of the Sea into appointment television — and made Nick and Jessica bigger than either of their music careers ever had.
Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees and Jessica Simpson married on October 26, 2002, and let MTV's cameras into their Calabasas home the following year. Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica premiered on August 19, 2003, scored to Lachey's ballad "This I Swear," and the premiere delivered the show's defining moment within minutes: Jessica, eating from a can of Chicken of the Sea, genuinely unsure whether it was chicken or fish. The clip ran everywhere, late-night hosts feasted, and a reality-TV archetype was born.
The engine was Jessica's cheerful naivety set against Nick's exasperated straight-man routine, and it worked so well that by the end of 2003 the couple were genuine household names, more famous for being married on camera than for any single either had released. The show ran three seasons and 40 episodes, ending March 30, 2005.
The fairy tale didn't outlive the format. Simpson filed for divorce in December 2005, months after the finale aired, and the split was finalized in 2006. But Newlyweds had already done its cultural work: alongside The Osbournes it proved celebrities playing themselves at home were a ratings force, paving the way for every celebrity-couple reality show that followed — and Simpson, long since the punchline's owner, eventually turned the tuna moment into her own well-compensated joke.
