MythBusters
Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, two special-effects veterans and a crash-test dummy named Buster, testing urban legends with real experiments and — whenever remotely possible — explosions. MythBusters was every 2000s science class's reward day, and it convinced a generation that engineering was cooler than anything in the textbook.
MythBusters premiered on Discovery Channel on January 23, 2003, created by Peter Rees and produced by Australia's Beyond International. The premise was a simple dare: what if you actually tested the things people claim are true? Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman brought decades of special-effects and model-building experience to the job, attacking each myth with real rigs, real data, and a shared belief that the most satisfying result is the one you can watch detonate. Buster, the long-suffering crash-test dummy, absorbed the punishment.
In season two the show added a build team — Kari Byron and Tory Belleci, joined in season three by roboticist Grant Imahara — and the workshop-ensemble formula locked in. Through the 2000s it became a classroom institution: the show substitute teachers put on when they wanted the class to actually pay attention, and the reason a wave of kids decided science might be a personality. Busted, plausible, or confirmed entered the household vocabulary.
The original run ended on March 6, 2016, but the formula — curiosity, rigor, spectacle — kept going through spin-offs and revivals, including MythBusters Jr. in 2019 with Savage hosting a cast of young builders. Few shows ever made the scientific method feel so much like recess.
