Gwen Stefani (Solo Era)
After a decade fronting No Doubt, Gwen Stefani reinvented herself as a solo pop force in 2004 — dropping "Hollaback Girl," parading her Harajuku Girls, and launching a fashion empire. It was maximalist, brand-savvy 2000s pop at its peak.
Gwen Stefani had already spent a decade as the frontwoman of No Doubt when she launched a solo career with Love. Angel. Music. Baby. in November 2004. Conceived as a fun dance-pop side project, it became a blockbuster — peaking at number five, eventually going five-times platinum, and spinning off "Rich Girl," "Cool," and the inescapable "Hollaback Girl."
"Hollaback Girl" hit number one and became the first single ever to sell a million digital copies in the United States, its "B-A-N-A-N-A-S" hook everywhere in 2005. Stefani built a whole aesthetic around the era — the four silent "Harajuku Girls" dancers and her L.A.M.B. fashion line — turning herself into a pop-and-fashion brand.
Her second solo album, The Sweet Escape, followed in 2006 before she returned to No Doubt. The solo run was brief, but its peak — Harajuku, red lipstick, and that spelled-out chorus — defined a slice of mid-2000s pop.
