Gossip Girl premiered on The CW on September 19, 2007, adapted from Cecily von Ziegesar's novel series by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage — the team behind The O.C. The premise was pure late-2000s: Manhattan private-school elites surveilled by an anonymous blogger, voiced by Kristen Bell, who narrated their downfalls to everyone's flip phones. Blake Lively's Serena, Leighton Meester's Blair, Ed Westwick's Chuck, and Penn Badgley's Dan became the faces of the era's teen drama.
The cultural peak came fast. New York magazine declared it the greatest teen drama of all time in 2008, and the show's own marketing weaponized its notoriety — a 2008 ad campaign quoted its condemnations as selling points, splashing "Every Parent's Nightmare" and the Parents Television Council's "Mind-Blowingly Inappropriate" across promotional posters. It won 18 Teen Choice Awards, steered late-2000s fashion, and spawned international adaptations.
