Waffle Crisp
Post's maple-syrup-scented cereal shaped like tiny waffles — the smell hit you the second the box opened, like Sunday breakfast poured into a bowl. Sweet enough that the milk at the bottom tasted like dessert.
Waffle Crisp first launched from Post in 1996: little corn-cereal waffles carrying a heavy maple-syrup flavor and, more memorably, a maple aroma that filled the kitchen the moment you opened the box. The early ads credited a team of 'grannies' who supposedly cooked each piece by hand, a folksy origin story for a very sweet cereal.
Over the years the branding shifted to a cast of characters — an anthropomorphic waffle named Waffle Boy in red tennis shoes, squaring off against a villain called Professor Burnt Toast. Through it all the pitch stayed the same: breakfast that tasted and smelled like a plate of syrup-drenched waffles without the plate.
Waffle Crisp had a real disappearing act in its history — Post discontinued it in August 2018, to genuine outcry from fans, before bringing it back in January 2021. It's one of the rare 90s cereals that fans successfully willed back onto shelves, still selling on the strength of that unmistakable open-the-box maple smell.
