Supermarket Sweep

Supermarket Sweep was already a television veteran when it became a 90s obsession. Al Howard created the original for ABC, where it ran from December 1965 to July 1967 with host Bill Malone — but that version was a footnote. The show everyone actually remembers premiered on Lifetime on February 5, 1990, hosted by the eternally sweatered David Ruprecht with announcer Johnny Gilbert, and ran until June 16, 1995. Three teams of two answered grocery-trivia questions to bank time, then came the part nobody ever fast-forwarded: the Big Sweep, a timed stampede through a full mock supermarket where contestants raced to fill carts with the most expensive haul they could grab.

The strategy was its own folklore. Every regular viewer knew the moves — go for the turkeys and hams, grab the diapers, hit the coffee aisle — and every regular viewer yelled them at the screen. The winning team hunted product clues through the aisles in a bonus round worth $5,000, and Ruprecht closed each episode with the sign-off that burrowed into a generation's brain — that the next time you were at the checkout and heard the beep, you should "think of all the fun you could have on Supermarket Sweep."

The show proved hard to kill. PAX resurrected it from April 2000 to May 2003 with Ruprecht still at the register, and in October 2020 ABC brought it back in primetime with Leslie Jones — a superfan who had campaigned for the job — hosting through early 2022 with a top prize inflated to $100,000. But the version that endures is the Lifetime one: fluorescent aisles, matching sweatshirts, and the purest game-show fantasy ever aired — being told the store is briefly, gloriously free.
